‘Ms. Marvel’ Will Feature Marvel’s First Muslim Superhero; Watch the First Trailer

On June 8th, Marvel Studios will introduce its first Muslim superhero, Kamala Khan, in new Disney+ series.

Nine years after being introduced in Marvel Comics, Muslim superhero Kamala Khan will appear in new Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. In 2013, Khan became the first Muslim superhero to headline a Marvel comic. As a Pakistani American-teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel will swing into action on Disney+ on June 8th.

On Tuesday, an official trailer of the upcoming series made its debut. Backed by “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, Khan appears to be a day-dreaming high school nerd who fantasizes of becoming a superhero. “It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City that save the world,” Khan sighs.

Halfway in the trailer, she gains cosmic powers with glowing eyes and the ability to throw electrifying punches with a giant fist.

After an extensive casting call, Canadian actress Iman Vellani will portray Khan. Additional cast members include Aramis Knight as Kareem/Red Dagger, Saagar Shaikh as Khan’s older brother Amir, Matt Lintz as Khan’s best friend Bruno Carrelli, Rish Shah as Kamran, Laurel Marsden as Zoe Zimmer, with Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur as Khan’s parents.

The a six-episode first season is directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy while Bisha K. Ali will serve as executive producer and head writer.

In February 2023, Vellani will star alongside Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel) and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau/secondary Captain Marvel) in The Marvels. Earlier this month, Brie honored her co-stars in an International Women’s Day post on Twitter.

“You two inspire me more than you know and I’m honored to be saving lives alongside you,” Larson wrote.

The show premieres on Disney+ June 8th.
