It’s been quite some time since we heard new material from Kendrick Lamar. That may be about to change in the coming months. On Tuesday, multiple outlets re-posted a picture of the Compton MC on a pay phone. The shots are rumored to be part of an upcoming video shoot. People Magazine was the first outlet to report the sighting.
The last we heard from Kendrick was 2018’s Black Panther soundtrack, which he executive produced and contributed original songs to. Back in May, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith promised that new Kendrick music was coming soon. If the reports are accurate, the wait won’t be much longer.
Though he’s been quiet from a musical standpoint, the two years since dropping the Black Panther soundtrack haven’t exactly been uneventful. Last year, Kendrick launched the experimental creative company pgLang. A biography about Lamar, The Butterfly Effect, will also hit bookshelves in October. Last July, Kendrick and his fiancee welcomed a baby girl into the world. His 2015 protest anthem “Alright” was recently featured in the AMC series Songs That Shook America.
Kendrick’s last solo album, Damn., won a Pulitzer prize for distinguished musical composition. The Pulitzer Board called the album a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
Stay tuned for further information about upcoming Kendrick Lamar releases. In the meantime, stream Kendrick Lamar on all major digital streaming platforms.
