HBO Max Announces Batman Spin-Off Series from Matt Reeves

DC Comics is building their own cinematic universe with HBO’s premium-tier streaming service.

It appears HBO Max and DC Comics are taking a cue from the MCU.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO’s premium-tier streamer has announced a new Batman spin-off series from director Matt Reeves, who is already behind an upcoming big-screen reboot of the franchise. Still untitled, the series will reportedly be a Law & Order-ish police procedural set in Gotham City. HBO vet, Terence Winter (of Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos,) is on board to write and executive produce alongside Reeves and Dylan Clark.

What’s more, the show will take place within the same narrative world being built in Reeves’ The Batman film, which stars Robert Pattinson in the titular role, as well as Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman,) Colin Farrel (The Penguin,) Paul Dano (The Riddler,) and Jeffery Wright (Commissioner Gordon.) But it’s unclear whether any members of the film’s cast are involved in the series. Still, it’s an expansion of what the streamer and DC have already begun to unveil in their programming.

At launch, HBO Max announced two new series for Green Lantern and Justice League Dark, respectively, piling on to the licenses for DC Universe’s Harley Quinn and Doom Patrol (two shows that have no business being as good as they are.) But doubling and tripling down on DC titles makes plenty of sense when you’re up against the Marvel/Mouse juggernaut, which will unveil the first two of eight (!?) new series on Disney+ later this year.

No date for the Batman series has been announced just yet. But the Reeves/Pattinson film recalibration is tentatively set for an October 1, 2021 premiere. Stay tuned for updates on all of it in the weeks and months ahead.
