‘Get Out’ Tops Writers Guild of America’s 101 Greatest Scripts of the Century

Get Out won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2018.

Four years after its initial release, Get Out is still racking up accolades.

The latest honors earned by Jordan Peele’s blockbuster 2017 directorial debut is the top slot on the Writers Guild of America‘s list of the 101 greatest scripts of the 21st century. The list, which was published earlier today, features a ranking of elite screenplays from some of the most revered filmmakers of the last 21 years.

Joining Get Out in the top five is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (written by Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry,) The Social Network (written by Aaron Sorkin,) Parasite (written by Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won,) and No Country for Old Men (written by Joel and Ethan Coen.) The list also features a number of entries from Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino (the only filmmaker to place two scripts in the top 10,) and The Nolan Brothers.

As for why the WGA decided a list of this sort was necessary, well, it’s become something of a tradition. The organization has previously published lists of “The 101 Funniest Screenplays,” “The 101 Best Written TV Series,” and “The 101 Greatest Screenplays.” Outside of the ranking ritual, the WGA seems intent on sparking a good debate amongst cinephiles. “As voted upon by the members of the Writers Guilds West and East, the list of the 101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (so far) is both a celebration of the great writers and screenplays of the last 21 years and a study of how writing for the screen has evolved and diversified since the 20th Century,” says Aaron Mendelsohn, chair of Publicity and Marketing for the organization. “Plus, it’s a great conversation — and argument — starter,” Mendelsohn adds.
