Winston Duke On ‘Black Panther 2’ Cast Mourning Chadwick Boseman During Filming: “We Missed Our Guy”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor Winston Duke revealed the grief that castmates experienced following the death of Chadwick Boseman.

Grief following the 2020 death of Chadwick Boseman was common on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While attending Disney’s D23 Fan Expo last Saturday (September 10), actor Winston Duke (who portrays M’Baku in the Black Panther sequel) opened up about the set’s atmosphere without Boseman.

“It was melancholy,” Duke told E! News. “There was a lot of joy, first and foremost, to just be back and be back with everybody and jump back into playing, but we missed our guy.”

The film follows T’Challa’s passing as Wakanda looks to crown a new leader and Black Panther. The first official teaser for the film, which was soundtracked by a rendition of Bob Marley and the Wailers‘ 1974 classic “No Woman, No Cry” from Tems, and “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar, finds the Wakandans mourning the loss of T’Challa, while Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje band together to protect their nation.

“Every day, someone else would manifest their grief, and we’d have to come together to help soothe them and take care of them,” Duke shared. “We had to overcome this grief and create something really beautiful and special, and we did. I think we accomplished that.”

While visiting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday (September 15) to promote her new film The Silent TwinsWakanda Forever actress Letitia Wright shared that the film is a “love letter” to Boseman.

“I feel like it’s a love letter to him. Every day on set I focused my energy on each scene to dedicate to him,” Wright said, adding, “I wanted to dedicate excellence to this film so that he can be proud.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases to theaters November 11.
