Help Bring This Feature-Length Native Tongues Documentary To Life

Suppose there'd be no hip-hop-as-we-know-it without the formative and pioneering collective known as Native Tongues. Heads know this, new-schoolers will learn this.

The early-nineties crew, comprised A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, The Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep and Chi-Ali, changed the game in more ways than they'll every own up to, as a collective or as respective artists, but as many of you know it wasn't all daisies in the Daisy Age of hip-hop. Individually, many of the members have spoken to the rise ("Buddy") and almost instant collapse of Native Tongues as an outfit, but their influence on the culture, injecting a fun-loving and socially-conscious yet not overtly political element to a scene that was beginning to take itself too seriously.

Nearly thirty years down the line we see their mark in pivotal artists like Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, and yes, even superstars like Drake or Kanye, but there's never been a definitive telling of their tale. Until now, that is. Filmmaker, Omar Akil, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring his new feature-length documentary treatment Speaking In Tongues: The Legend Of The Native Tongue Posse to life with a little bit of your help, and it's already looking like a must-see for any and all lovers of true notes. The campaign includes all sorts of goodies inspired by the film and its subjects. Peep the film's trailer down below and follow the link to throw in your dollar.
