IGBO Spread Their Floral Funk On New Single "Gimmie Gimmie"

If it's funk you seek then IGBO has it morning, noon and night. The New York-based ensemble are marking the month of May with the release of their new single "Gimmie Gimmie," and it's so positively groovy that we'd be remiss not to offer it up as a perfect example of funk's vital, thriving status today. Made of a flurry of percussion, long organ chords, popping bass and a simple but effective drum beat, the track is a perfect opening to the summer months and brings to mind flowers unfurling in the sunlight, their colors already vibrant and fully-formed.

"Gimmie Gimmie" seems to have it all--horns, Prince-approved guitars, Sergio Mendes vocals and a latin breakdwon that shimmys all the way around the block before it finally makes it back to the tune's closing minute. "The point is this: square-butts tend to covet funkiness by asking for pointers, under the impression that there is a formula. These carbon copies can be found prancing about on the net. But alas, clones have no soul," IGBO said. "Trying to clean up the funk, you've got another thing coming."

With lead vocals from Bronx siren 10ille and Brookyln vocalist Lorely Rodriguez providing backing tracks, "Gimmie Gimmie" is sure to set the tone just right for just about...anything. The track is the first single off of IGBO's debut EP INDIGO GREEN BROWN ORANGE, which is due out June 9th. Listen below.
