Under the category of “never a day off,” Common goes straight from that other awards show to the BET Honors, where he delivered an inspiring rendition of his song “The Believer,” backed by a choir of talented kids and Anthony Hamilton stepping ably in to fill John Legend‘s shoes on the hook. Come to think of it, this song is kind of the perfect soundtrack to what the honors are all about–and this is definitely the way it was meant to be heard. Watch above (and find the original album version on Com’s LP The Dreamer, The Believer on iTunes now).

a two minded person is unstable in all of their ways. Common, we don’t believe you. Put your fist down. That didn’t feel authentic at all. It felt forced, and weak. Get out of the conscious lane

Speak for yourself. You are no more a representative of “we” than any other Joe Blow. Also, stop being lazy and do the history. Common has been awake and aware. BTW, real Hip Hop is always conscious. Its only become a “lane” when it was labeled that by some white marketing guy.

Do you people every give credit for anything? While everyone has an opinion and the right to speak, it gets so old hearing and reading this sidebar messy mess. Let’s do this…. you get on here and talk crap about everybody and everything. If you don’t like something, YOU get up and so something authentic and get a conscious like STOP IT WITH THE NEGATIVITIE

Dope version, Anthony Hamilton was a nice touch… I liked the stripped back feel, it brought the lyrics to the forefront. Nice!

The Honor bestowed upon the contributors to Black American culture and the world was embodied in this song. Those who spew negative thoughts didn’t understand the essence of the struggle of all the slaves determined to survive in the face of ALMOST insurmountable odds.
