Pass The Popcorn: MTV's Forthcoming 'White People' Doc To Explore The Pervasiveness Of White Privilege

What does white privilege mean to you, fellow fair-skinned folks of the world? Before you answer, let me just say, that it's real and it's pervasive, however you choose to define its perimeters. And a new documentary from MTV is slated to delve deeper and more explicitly into the premise than anything in recent memory has. White People, a collaborative effort with Define America founder Jose Antonio Vargas, is slated to tour the country's high schools and community centers, posing my opening question to both white teens and teens of color alike in an attempt to gain a more firm understanding of how they see it and where this generation stands. Debuting July 22nd at 8pm, the documentary will center on the stories of five white kids of varying backgrounds and upbringings, exploring how they kids develop identity in a country that's bronzing more and more each day. All of which seems rather interesting, but it may be a more a thorough and altogether more gripping treatment if it focused on the lives of children of color and how they form identity when the world they live in consistently treats them as lesser than. Suppose we'll see how it all comes together, but you can catch the preview of White People below.
