President Obama’s List Of Sci-Fi Classics Is Good But Predictable

Aside from being one of the best and coolest presidents America has ever had, President Obama is also a science fiction film and television fanatic like all of us (which only adds to his coolness).

Serving as the guest editor for WIRED Obama discussed several of his favorite sci-fi films and TV series, which includes 2001: A Space Odyssey; Blade Runner; Cosmos: A Personal Voyage; Close Encounters Of The Third Kind; Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope; Star Trek; The Martian and, of course, The Matrix.

Understandably, many of these are considered classics within the sci-fi genre, but it’s nice to hear what Obama has to say about each one of them.

Both Star Trek and Cosmos are the only shows that pop up on the list, with Obama offering about the former: “It wasn’t about technology. It was about values and relationships. It uses science fiction to promote a humanistic ethic.”

And as for Cosmos, which was created by famed and iconic astronomer Carl Sagan in the 1980s: “It fed my lifelong fascination with space.”

As for some of the movies on the list here’s some bits he offered on A Space Odyssey, Star Wars: A New Hope and The Matrix.

On 2001: A Space Odyssey: “It captures the grandeur and scale of the unknown.”

On Star Wars: A New Hope: “It’s fun and revolutionized special effects.”

On The Matrix: “It asks basic questions of our reality, and it looks very cool.”

Getting any type of pop culture related list from the POTUS is always a treat. A few months ago he released a summer Spotify playlist that included artists such as The Temptations; Leon Bridges; Nina Simone; Chance The Rapper; Janet Jackson; Floetry and D’Angelo.

Plus, let’s not forget he also had his own music festival at the White House. We’re going to miss you and your coolness, President Obama.
