Jay Z and Justin Timberlake present the video for “Holy Grail” – the Timbaland produced lead track from Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail LP – directed by Anthony Mandler. The video for the track juxtaposes emptiness and excess to demonstrate the fears and personal feelings Hov states in the standout track. Jay’s scenes are filmed in relative darkness that is broken only by streams of light, bulb flashes, shots of Mike Tyson fight footage and the shine of his Cuban link. JT stands amidst the ruins of excess flanked by flames, a smoldering feast and women shrouded in white sheets. The deterioration related to the dangers Jay runs down is best demonstrated in the chopping and screwing that interrupts the fluidity of the track at the most uncomfortable times – like during the hook. That stylistic choice effectively translates the anxieties buried beneath the trappings of fame. Check the footage below to view the official video for “Holy Grail” from Jay Z.
