According to NBC New York, Prosecutor Daniel Suneson has asked Stockholm’s District Court to hold Rocky until July 25, with a ruling expected later Friday. Rocky has been held in pre-trial detention for the past two weeks.
Suneson’s request comes after reports that Trump is trying to help free the Harlem rapper. On Thursday, TMZ reported that “President Trump is very much aware of A$AP Rocky’s legal sitch in Sweden — and he’s got his team working to get him freed … thanks in part to Kim K and Kanye West.”
Kim Kardashian West then shared the article in a tweet and thanked Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, and “everyone involved” with “the efforts to Free ASAP Rocky.”
However, as a separate NBC News report notes, Kardashian West did not speak on the part of the TMZ report that said she and Kanye West personally lobbied the administration on Rocky’s behalf.
Previously, it was reported that the U.S. State Department is monitoring Rocky’s case.
A State Department spokesperson shared with Politico that the department is aware of Rocky’s case and that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been briefed. Robert O’Brien, a top official at the department and the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, is also closely monitoring the situation.
“There are certainly some facts about the arrest and detention that raise concerns,” the spokesperson said. “We expect all governments, including Sweden, to treat American citizens fairly and with respect. … We hope to see ASAP Rocky and his colleagues back on tour and reunited with friends and family soon.”
Rocky was arrested on July 2 after a video surfaced of him and his entourage in a street fight with two people. Rocky claimed that the two men kept following them in Stockholm, which resulted in the altercation.
