If your neck ain't already broke, it's about to be. In a new interview, DJ Premier has dropped massive hints that he plans to release a brand new LP featuring contributions from Nas, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and many more. The project has been tentatively titled Last Session @ 320, a clear nod to the Manhattan studio that Premier vacated in 2014 after many, many years of residence.
Preemo dropped the news while speaking with France's Hip-Hop 4 Life As the video clip opens, we learn about the similar production approaches of DJ Premier and Dr. Dre. He speaks on the recent Compton sessions, and recalls "Just watching how [Dre] takes command of the whole session...and takes the lead on how it sounds, how it should be arranged, but also open to ideas from other people, including myself...I was just basically noticing how many things we do the same." Premier stresses that both he and Dre are still acolytes of analog techniques and equipment, which should make perfect sense if you've listened to, say, anything more than two seconds of either one's catalog.
Premier also speaks out on the rumored Gang Starr biopic film, stressing that he's working closely with Guru's sister Tricia to make sure it's done at the right time and in the right way. "I told her 'Let's do it, but let's wait and make sure we have some time to get a really good script.'" Trust that it won't be rushed.
Premier stresses that a documentary film about D&D studios featuring Jay-Z and Nas and others will accompany Last Session. Ed Sheeran, Christina Aguilera, Smif-N-Wessun and potentially Eminem will also appear on the record, which means this might possibly be the wildest collective joint since...ever. Watch the entire interview below, which should be a back-to-back treat for fans of Gang Starr especially.
