Idris Elba has been linked to James Bond rumors for years now. Ever since Daniel Craig walked away from portraying Bond following 2021’s No Time To Die (and for many years prior to that box office hit), Elba’s name has been floated by fans and lingered in the rumor mill as an actor likely to step into the famous tuxedo. Despite the long-running fan campaigns, Elba himself downplays playing the iconic spy. In conversation with British GQ, Elba once again dismissed the idea of playing 007.
The Masters Of The Universe star says certain audiences won’t welcome a Black Bond.
“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” Elba admitted. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
In Masters Of The Universe, Elba plays another already-established popular character; Man-At-Arms, lieutenant and mentor to protagonist hero He-Man (Nicholas Galitzine). The movie, directed by Travis Knight, also starring Jared Leto as nemesis Skeletor, is the latest adaptation of the popular 1980s cartoon and toyline. Man-At-Arms is also another fictional character who has been canonically portrayed as white.
“Talk about recasting,” says Elba. “I was a bit conscious about it. But then I was like, ‘What are you talking about?!’ Man-At-Arms could be any color! He’s got green legs, for God’s sake!”
But when it comes to Bond, the former Wire star doesn’t think colorblind casting is a feasible option. Elba also went on to say that the beloved character shouldn’t be reimagined for any particular agenda.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” Elba continued. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
