Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police temporarily detained DaBaby on Monday night following his concert in the city’s Bojangles Coliseum. The department eventually issued two citations. On Thursday, the department confirmed they have opened an internal investigation to Charlotte’s local NBC affiliate.
The search occurred after security at the venue claimed they smelled marijuana coming from the rapper’s white Dodge Charger. CMPD officers also claimed to “observe marijuana in plain view” after approaching the car. On Tuesday, CMPD released a statement offering more details. In the statement, officers state that DaBaby walked away and refused to speak with them.
According to police reports, officers found less than one half-ounce of marijuana in the car. They also found a concealed firearm, empty Glock 23 magazine, and loose .45 caliber bullets. Officers issued DaBaby two citations and later released him. One citation was for misdemeanor marijuana possession, the other for resisting, obstructing, and delaying arrest. According to local media, the officers were originally pursuing a weapons charge against him but decided against going further.
The next day, DaBaby posted multiple videos from the incident to his Instagram stories. One video shows officers approaching the car with flashlights in hand, peering through its windows. The rapper spoke to local media after the incident. View the full interview above.
“I had my outstanding video production team prepared…we got high-quality audio and video of me doing everything but resisting arrest,” he told reporters. “You will see how dirty the CMPD police department just did me on the holidays in front of my daughter when I was putting on a show for my city.”
