While discussing the EP, Thought revealed that the project initially started out as a full-length project before becoming a five-song release.

"9th and I we had been working for some time. We went into our working relationship feeling like maybe it would become an album at some point or more like a traditional full-length feature," the rapper said. "So we've got lots of songs but we had to narrow it down to the songs that made the most sense as a composition."

"There were a couple of joints that I really wanted on there that just didn't make it, but we're gonna be able to use them for something else," he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, Thought talked about current rappers that he enjoys, naming Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, the Creator, and Young Savage (who Thought has mentored).

Prior to this, Thought visited Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning where he discussed Pusha T and Drake's feud. Thought didn't mention who he thought won the battle, but said that he likes both records for different reasons. He also mentioned that he doesn't love when rap beef gets too vicious, saying: "I'm not the biggest fan of the getting so personal, involving children and spouses."
