How to Be Outside, Inside featuring Kiesh Herman & Crystal Anderson

The BedStuy-based couple, now a family of three, shares an inside peek at their New York.

Unless you lived under a rock in 2019, you probably saw the viral video of Lakiesha “Kiesh” Herman and Crystal Anderson sharing the story of how they met for Refinery 29. Since then, the two have become three, welcoming their son, Jack, in 2024. The pair, who co-founded a media and fashion advertising house called A Very Good Job, are also mainstays in their BedStuy neighborhood, at various queer spaces, and anywhere the stylish people are gathered (see Crystal’s red carpet recaps on IG for reads that would put Joan Rivers to shame). This week, Kiesh and Crystal (and Jack) share their New York.

Okayplayer: When you want to be “outside” without being OUTSIDE, where do you go in NYC?

Lakiesha Herman and Crystal Anderson: We love the park, just setting up a picnic and letting the day pass. We frequent our local playground (A LOT). Saint James Libations or Selune for a drink. Again Vintage for a walk in the neighborhood and a warm broth. If we want to stay CLOSE to home, nothing beats our stoop; a glass of wine in hand, chatting with our neighbors!

Where do you go when you want to be around people, but not overwhelmed by crowds?

We love BABE Wine Bar for this feeling. Also, Tompkins Ave for the people watching. Our favorite, though, is a close friend's house party. We also love going to dinner at Evelina for a special night out. The food is top-notch, and we have a special seat that is perfect for watching the bartenders make our drinks.

What does your perfect NYC day look like, from morning to night?

Waking up with our son, then going to the playground and bumping into one of his favorite friends, watching them play. Walking home and putting him down for a nap, then sitting together on our stoop to have a coffee and gossip. Popping over to a local bar for an afternoon drink, then taking a slow walk home, allowing our boy to stop at his leisure. Finishing with a nice dinner all together, that Crystal likely made. Calling a babysitter, then heading out together for dancing, loving, and fun. Debriefing from the night as pillow talk, then drifting away until tomorrow.
