The Kid Mero Says ‘Desus & Mero’ Had Been Talking About Splitting For a While

While visiting podcast Basic!, former Desus & Mero co-host The Kid Mero said the duo wanted to split over a year ago.

It seems that the cancellation of Desus & Mero is new to fans, but old to former hosts The Kid Mero and Desus Nice. According to Deadline, Mero recently stopped by Basic! podcast where he revealed that the duo wanted to end the Showtime series over a year ago.

“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” he said. “As far back as June of last year, we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals. It’s not like I’m breaking up with my girlfriend on the phone. It was a strategy and one that we all agreed on.”

After admitting that it wouldn’t be ideal to continue a partnership “that’s coming to a natural end,” Mero went on to explain that the duo intended to split up while still being “supportive” of each other.

“At the end of the day, when things are winding down you got to recognize that they are winding down and not supermax Patrick Ewing when he has two [knee pads] and his career is coming to a close,” he added.

Last month, Showtime announced that Desus & Mero had concluded after four seasons and the two would be “pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward.”

“Desus Nice and the Kid Mero have made a name for themselves in comedy and in the late-night space as quick-witted cultural commentators,” the statement read.

A report from Puck also surfaced, alleging that Desus and Mero’s former manager Victor Lopez was cause for the show’s cancellation, saying that he resorted to “bullying, screaming, and making people on the show feel bad” during episode tapings.
