A Los Angeles-based activist has started a petition to rename the stretch of 5th Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets in NYC— right out front of Trump Tower — in honor of Barack Obama.
In its description, the petition cites Downtown LA’s recent dedication to 44, naming a block on the 134 Freeway after the preceding president. It asks “New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers.” Since going live, the petition has surpassed its initial 400,000 signature goal and is currently well on its way to the new benchmark of 425,000.
The petition’s author, Elizabeth Rowin, tells The New York Times, “I understand that it’s petty and it’s trolling,” but, she notes, “I think people who actually live in the district would like it.”
Others are less optimistic, however. City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, tells The Times, “As much as I love the idea of celebrating President Obama, I am not positive this is the best way.” Johnson goes on: “The Obamas epitomize class, dedication to public service and respect for the Oval Office,” adding “I’m pretty confident we can find a better way to honor the greatest president of my lifetime than by trolling the worst president of my lifetime.”
