Mixtape Mondays: Miguel x Opening Ceremony, Alchemist x KCRW + Jake One x PIMB

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.Jake One - Potholes Podcast

When we say "Mixtape Mondays" we like to put some emphasis on the "mix" part, as in "mixing" (see also blending, cutting, punch-phrasing, coast-to-coasting, transforming, phasing, backspinning, needle-dropping, scritchy-scratching, dubbing, pause-taping and moving the fader from A to B). We are not just using "mixtape" to mean "free album" or "I couldn't afford to clear these samples" is what I'm trying to get at. We like to hear the hand of a DJ at work. But on the other hand, some of the greatest DJs of all times have been defined not by their skill but by their selection, that simple yet all-important connecting-of-the-musical dots to create a coherent mood for the listener, whether on hi-fi vinyl or Spotify playlist. So this one is for the September Selectors; 3 (high-profile) music heads--MiguelThe Alchemist and "3 Kings" producer Jake One--who soundtracked our mood this particular monday:

Miguel - Opening Ceremony Mixtape Series #27:

This playlist compiled by Miguel (Unlimited) for NYC boutique-to-beat Opening Ceremony is the most select-y of the lot; the simplest of segues connect the tracks herein but ranging from Sa-Ra to Santigold to Bill Withers, from KING to some pop that p**$y business, the set not only makes an inspiring listen but a surprisingly telling window into the mind of Miguel. The mix is accompanied on the OC blog by a quick interview providing more insights into his influences (first concert attended by young Miguel: Dwele!) Stream/download below and find the tracklist after the jump.

Tracklist:

Holly Wood - Sa-Ra

Pop That (feat. Rick Ross, Drake & Lil Wayne) - French Montana

God from the Machine - Santigold

The Motto (feat. Lil Wayne) - Drake

The Story - KING

Hands on the Wheel (feat. ASAP Rocky) - ScHoolboy Q

Lovely Day (Remastered) - Bill Withers

Adorn - Miguel

Bands a Make Her Dance [Remix] (ft. Lil' Wayne & 2 Chainz) - Juicy J

Pomme - Sébastien Tellier

Party (Prod. by Kenny Beats) - ScHoolboy Q

The Alchemist - Cigarette Glow (Exclusive KCRW Mix):

The infamous Alchemist runs down a lovely mix of dusty sampled originals for the Los Angeles-based radio dial institution KCRW. These filthy soul fragments are nicely cut together but the emphasis here is on the depth and dopeness of the originals, not the format. Jake One - Potholes Podcast (September):

Seattle-based producer Jake One provides the latest in PIMB's podcast series, again with an emphasis on eclectic coherence and simple presentation. With a range covering Jodeci to New Royales to DJ Quik, it's just our cup of t-connection.
