Donna Summer, R.I.P.

This morning, the celebrity-focused site TMZ broke the news that Donna Summer, Queen of Disco, had just passed away in her Florida home at the age of 63. It is hardly wise to attempt to catalog all of Summer's hits in one place, considering she defined not only the disco genre but the disco era with 12" after 12" of groovy goodness, soundtracking the youth of those record obsessives who would go on to become the DJs of the hip-hop generation. It's also impossible to overtstate her impact on the unborn movements of house and techno, her collaborations with Giorgio Moroder arriving at a fusion of sexy soulfulness and experimental, futuristic drive that set the template for the current proliferation of global dance music. Across the world, people will be remembering Summer's legacy by playing back her biggest hits, from "I Feel Love" and "Love To Love You Baby," to the all-too-appropriate "Last Dance." But since May 17 will now forever be her day, it seems only appropriate that the universal DJ should put the needle to one of our favorites: "Spring Affair." Watch Donna's live performance from Soul Train at the height of her powers.
