Scary Movie scared up big laughs and a bigger box office in its opening weekend. The sixth entry in the popular spoof franchise had the franchise's best opening, at $105.5 million around the globe. Unofficially known as Scary Movie 6, the comedy marks the return of Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans to the popular and long-running film series that they created back in 2000. Elder brother Keenan Ivory Wayans directed the original film, and he serves as an executive producer on the newest entry.

Scary Movie’s box office was a $55 million domestic start for the film and it made another $50.5 million overseas. The movie’s global start is better than Paramount and Spyglass’ Scream 7 franchise-record $97 million global take from earlier in 2026. Also opening the weekend of June 5, Masters of the Universe landed at $54.3 million worldwide, which splits as $25 million overseas from 86 territories and $29.3 million in North America.

Marlon has said that he was inspired to work with his brothers again by his late father.

“My father was in the hospital for a few weeks before he passed,” Wayans told Variety. “And in one of our final conversations, he said, ‘I think you and your brothers should work together again.’”

Marlon reflected on how the rights to the Scary Movie franchise were taken from the Wayans clan by Harvey and Bob Weinstein back in the early 2000s. It led to Shawn and Marlon not being involved in the franchise after Scary Movie 2. But when Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman presented an opportunity, Marlon was willing to listen.

“Me and my family don’t hold grudges,” he says. “So when Jon hit me up to do Scary Movie, I was like, I can’t do this without my brothers. So I got Shawn and Keenen on board. This is a return back to the franchise we all created, so forget all the bad years! This isn’t Scary Movie 6, this is a reboot.”
