As a part of Melber's "The Beat with Ari" show, the pair spoke at the Brooklyn Museum, where Bey's Negus exhibit is. The two talked about a number of topics, including what Bey is listening to these days.
"Earl Sweatshirt always. Blu., Mach-Hommy, JPEGMafia, Kendrick, Kelsey Lu, Blood Orange — it's a lot of old stuff too," Bey said, adding that Robert Glasper, Eubie Blake, The Tony Williams Lifetime, and Emahoy Maryam are also in his current rotation.
Elsehwere, Bey also spoke on his friendship with Dave Chappelle, referring to the comedian as "my best friend, one of my dearest friends for life."
The rapper also spoke about Negus and the inspiration behind it.
"Art is not just...limited or restricted to what you can hang on a wall. It includes music as well," Bey said. "I had a strong feeling that it needed to be a more dynamic experience than simply downloading it from a device, and it's a meditative, reflective sort of experience."
Negus was unveiled back in November at the Brooklyn Museum. In related news, Bey recently revealed in another interview that he has unreleased music with MF DOOM.
"I have some unreleased music with DOOM, and I have unreleased material that I’ve been doing at different performances and venues, which I do like to do," he said.
