Micheail Ward was found guilty a day after a separate jury convicted co-defendant Kenneth Williams, the suspected getaway driver, in the killing of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton. Pendleton was a sophomore honors student and had performed with her high school band at Barack Obama’s second inauguration a week before she was killed in January 2013.

Ward was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery to Sebastian Moore and Lawrence Sellers. Moore and Sellers, also students, were present with Pendleton when she was fatally shot.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, Pendleton and her friends were at Harsh Park when the shooting took place. Ward was reportedly carrying out revenge on who he thought were rival gang members.

After the verdict was handed down Pendleton’s parents spoke outside the courtroom.

“My tears today are because I feel like finally, something positive in our life has happened, as a result of our daughter being gone. There is justice for Hadiya now because she did not deserve that,” Cleopatra Cowley, Hadiya’s mother, said.

“It’s surreal. It’s something we’ve been waiting on for over five years,” Nathaniel Pendleton, Hadiya’s father, added. “We got justice.”
