If the SuperBowl had dead children, the Grammys 2015 had N.W.A.! Released on the heels of tonight’s Grammy Awards comes the official trailer for the upcoming Straight Outta Compton movie (Universal Pictures) complete with an intro from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. Well, ‘intro’ perhaps does not do it justice…this is no PSA shot against a white drop-cloth. Opening on the words “Welcome to Compton,” Dre and Cube take the viewer on a cinematically-scored and beautifully photographed (in classic black and white) tour of the old hood that includes stop for a) spontaneous block party in the tradition of the finest early ’90s music videos, b) a barbershop catch-up with The Game (how much you want to bet they edited out two hours of Game gushing in borderline-Stan mode) and c) Compton’s heir apparent, young Kendrick Lamar, posted up in front of Tam’s burgers to explain the elders impact on boys in the hood. Then the action starts.
Judging from the trailer the film may deliver on the promise the title holds. Both Ice Cube and Eazy E’s characters seem uncannily well-cast and Paul Giamatti lends gravitas and star-power to the role of label-head Jerry Heller. The real-life N.W.A. story, of course, has stakes much higher than the typical biopic, revolving as it does around the flashpoints of gang affiliation, the L.A. drug war and the divisive, anthemic refrain of “Fuck Tha Police.” It certainly looks from the montage here that the filmmakers went the extra mile to bring these stakes to screen, from riot scenes to the infamous tanks and battering rams fielded in South Central by the L.A.P.D.’s anti-crack task force. Watch the official Straight Outta Compton Red Band Trailer with Introduction from Dr. Dre and Ice Cube below. Straight Outta Compton: The Story of N.W.A. is in theaters August 14th.
