Vince Staples Brings The Heat For His XXL Freshman Freestyle

One of the brightest rising stars in hip-hop (and only 21 years old at that), Vince Staples was named to the 2015 XXL Freshman class roster earlier this month, and today the MC has fulfilled his inductee duties and dropped his freshman freestyle--and of course it's brilliant. Against a black backdrop, dappled in what looks like some sort of rainbow fish/kaleidoscope spotlight, Staples opens a cappella, calm and collected. "I apologize if I might be the reason that your son never made it back home / He shoulda gave up the phone" is the line that kicks it all off, and it only gets tougher from there.

Staples proceeds to touch on gang violence, police violence, flawed preaching and reduced lunches at school. "Rich men in Porsches / Broke moms on bus stops / Livin with emotion / Look what the love got" he muses; the beat never comes in but then it's never needed in the first place. The ratatat of Vince Staples keeps the rhythm together and then some. Staples already gifted the internet with a freestyle this week, dropping bars with Tyler The Creator on Peter Rosenberg's "Real Late" show on Hot 97, and we at Okayplayer are still bumping to the sounds of "Get Paid," his newest single. Staples debut LP, a double album entitled Summertime '06 is set to drop June 30th. Watch his freestyle below and get set to see a lot more from this talented young'un.
