The Weeknd drops visuals for "Kiss Land"--the first song and title track from his sophomore album--featuring a whole lot of NSFW geisha girl-on-dominatrix action happening just off camera (or conveniently blurred out by the 1980s video scan-lines). This video looks pretty much like one would expect from the audio/teaser for the track--which is to say, like a sex tape shot in a karaoke bar run by the shanghai triads would look if it was directed by Blade Runner-era Ridley Scott--but somehow all the tattoos and group sex leaves me very un-titillated. I still fucks with The Weeknd as an artist and everything, in spite of the general feeling that a lot of his previously gushy fan-critics are now in abandon ship mode. But it does feel like he is saving his best melodies and songwriting skills for collabos with rappers that--personally speaking--I am not really trying to hear (looking at you Wiz J and Juice Khalifa). Given the significance of today, in fact, I would rather he'd dropped a guerilla-style video for his "Dirty Diana" cover. Oh well. I cosigns the Basquiat/Johnny Kemp dreads and I'm still looking forward to Kiss Land.
