TEREZA - Baduology: An Ode To Erykah Badu

TEREZA jumps into the mix for Red Bull Music Academy with a tribute to the one and only Erykah Badu in celebration of her birthday and the seminal debut Baduizm LP, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Get into Baduology.

Happy Birthday, Erykah Badu - over 25 years in the business and still State of the Art, uncompromising, fearless, constantly evolving and truly inspiring to whole generations of musicians.

BADUOLOGY is my personal ode to the 'analogue girl in the digital world' in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her debut album 'Baduizm' which is still one of my all-time-favorite LPs. It features some of Queen E’s most significant work from the past two decades, alongside songs sampled on Badu records as well as unique skits and blends, all edited and mixed by myself.

The most special thing about it? It contains 14 exclusive contributions from some of my favorite producers / vocalists!

S/o Bluestaeb // Brenk Sinatra // Dexter // Duktus // IAMNOBODI // Kabuki // Klimeks // Luka // Masego // Noah Slee // Serious Klein // S.Fidelity // Silkersoft // Thallus !!

DJ Stikmand drops a mix packed with heaters to pay tribute to the musical stylings of celebrated hip-hop producer Alchemist. A collaborator and close associate of Action Bronson, Dilated Peoples and Mobb Deep, Alchemist has been behind some of the hardest beats in recent decades. Bout time somebody shed light on his output. Here’s to the chemist!

DJ Stikmand puts together his favourite productions from the Alchemist who rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a close associate of Dilated Peoples and Mobb Deep and went on to produce many of hip hop's leading artists in the 2000s and has been hailed as one of the genre's leading producers.

The Smooth Operators - Tribute To Leon Ware

Soul man Leon Ware gets a memorial tribute all the way from the Netherlands with the latest from Professor Eddy and Martijn Soetens aka The Smooth Operators.

The Smooth Operators pay tribute to soul legend Leon Ware, who passed away yesterday. Besides a solo career as a singer with a velvet voice, Ware was best known for producing and writing songs for other artists, most notably on ‘I want you’, the classic album by Marvin Gaye. He also worked with soul giants like Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Maxwell, Minnie Riperton, Brenda Russell, The Isley Brothers, among many others. He was not a man of many big hits, but his influence was enormous. So one of the last true soul men has left the stage, but his songs remain in our memory.

Many of you might remember his 1st guest mix back over July 4th weekend last year - it’s been one of most popular mixes to date, and folks have been begging for more ever since.

EDAN - Sound Of The Funky Drummer

EDAN digs up an oldie but goodie to pay tribute to funk and soul legend Clyde Stubblefield with his Sound of the Funky Drummer set, which was originally recorded in 2004.

Made this mix back in 2004... A rapp-heavy celebration of Clyde Stubblefield's Funky Drummer break and it's impact on the culture... Comprised mostly of late 80's ~ early 90's rapp classics and rarities that all utilize the J.B. // Stubblefield spark/source in one form or another... Featuring the likes of 45 King, Ultramagnetic MC's, Divine Force, Kool G. Rap & Polo, Public Enemy, Lord Finesse, and so forth... All Hail The Godfather Of Soul and R.I.P. Clyde Stubblefield... Much love... Rest well...

The Soul Preacher - James Brown‘s Original Funky Drummer Clyde Stubblefield (1943 – 2017)

The Soul Preacher pays tribute to THE Funky Drummer, Clyde Stubblefield, with a 27-minute tribute mix that truly only the scratches the surface with respect to the man’s impact on music.

2017-02-18: Clyde Stubblefield dies at 73. He was best known for James Brown’s 1970 single "Funky Drummer", possibly the most sampled drum beat in music history. As a member of the original J.B.’s Mr. Stubblefield can be considered being one of Funk’s originators. This short mix doesn’t really reflect his huge impact on Funk music, but I had do at least a little something. Peace & Love to his family!

DJ Bluntskull - Straight Raggamuffin Hip Hop Mixtape Vol. 5

DJ Bluntskull serves up the fifth installment of the Straight Raggamuffin Hip Hop mixtape series with an hour long tribute to rude boy culture. This go-round Bluntskull mashes ragga and some golden era hip-hop classics with plenty of dancehall undertones and artist features. An unofficial but very proper tribute to Jamaica’s role in the founding of hip-hop culture, the set for Brooklyn Radio includes tracks from Beenie Man, Cutty Ranks, Louie Rankin, Blackout Ja, Cheshire Cat and more.

Kieran Meadows - Pieces Of My Heart (V-Day Mix)

DJ Kieran Meadows supplies a set for the broken and healing hearts of the world with the Pieces of My Heart Valentines Day mix. Capping 32-minutes past the one hour mark, the set looks beyond the art of seduction to deal with the complex emotions that accompany a devastating breakup.

This mix is for the lovers of love and the lovers of music — indeed it is the music of lovers, which serves as the common thread. This Valentine's Day, I imagine it will resonate with happy couples, but also those who are single and seeking, and especially anyone who has ever experienced painful heartbreak.

This mix represents the broken pieces of my heart, glued back together with powdered gold, like the Japanese concept of fixing broken ceramics called Kintsukuroi. As such with gold filling in the cracks, the object is seen as more beautiful than before. This mix is an exploration of how the soaring highs of love can exist one moment and then how in the next, we can experience the lows of heartbreak. Each as strong as the other. It asks the question, what's real? And is it worth it to feel? I say yes — it's better to open your heart and make yourself vulnerable to get the chance at feeling something amazing, even with the risk of pain. (This is nicely summed up by the mix's epilogue at around the 90-min mark.)

The track selection is a blend of genres, some classics, but mostly fresh new music (or at least interesting flips & remixes). It's a blend of all my favorite vibes: Soul, R&B, Future Sounds, Reggae/Dancehall, Afrobeats and Hip-Hop. This mix was meant to take you on a cohesive journey, a seamless flow of simultaneously basking in the glow of love, but also the looking back, the nostalgic longing — after all, isn't this why we write so many love songs? Love helps us grow and feel more alive on this journey called life. So put on this mix when you're chilling with your partner, or all alone, and let go to the vibe of the present moment — surrender to both love and hurt — and have faith and trust in the universe, remembering that "this too, shall pass."

Love and more love,

Kieran Meadows

King Britt x Josh Wink - Ovum Reunion #InTheLab @ CODA Philly

With what might be the first video contribution to the Mixtape Monday series, King Britt and Josh Wink reunited last week for their first live performance together in over a decade at CODA for The Lab Philly. The event presented by Mixmag and Smirnoff produced a formidable two-hour set. Going on after openers Nomi Ruiz, Rob Paine and Francisco Collazo, the Ovum Recordings founders formally celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Philadelphia based label they founded in 1994. The label remains a pillar of dance and electronic music.
