M.I.A. and Janelle Monáe will perform together from separate coasts tonight in the first ever bi-coastal hologram show to celebrate the launch of the new Audi A3. The live virtual collaboration features each artist playing a separate set, with M.I.A. beaming in from New York City and Janelle Monáe touching down in hologram form live from Los Angeles. The private performances, made possible by “integrated video mapping“, will feature two brand new collaborative tracks to cap the groundbreaking show. The set reportedly “utilizes 3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content, the result of which will be an electric never-before-seen 3D bi-coastal performance.” As holograms continue to change the approach to live performance, it will be interesting to see where the burgeoning technology takes the art of the stage show in the near future.
