'Luke Cage' Villain Cottonmouth Is The King In New Clip

Another day, another Luke Cage trailer. However, this one is all about Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, Luke Cage's adversary in the forthcoming Netflix series.

We honestly haven't seen too much of Cottonmouth (portrayed by Mahershala Ali), except for in trailers that encompass all parts of the show. But here we do get a small taste of his menace.

"You like my Biggie photo? Me too," Cottonmouth says to someone out of the frame as the short clip begins. "You know what draws your eye when you look at that? The crown. You wanna know why?"

The scene then transitions to Cottonmouth slapping someone in a chair, the person already badly beaten. The question lingers for a few seconds before Cottonmouth finally answers his own question: "Because everybody wants to be the king."

The image is arguably the most iconic picture of Biggie to be taken during his lifetime. Shot by photographer Barron Claiborne for the cover of Rolling Stone, the gold crown symbolized Christopher Wallace’s rise to being of the greatest rappers of not only the '90s but all time. While many already considered him a king among emcees, this truly sealed the deal.

As we learned from another Luke Cage teaser clip that dropped recently, music will play a very important role throughout the 13 episode series.

"From a musical perspective, Ali and I look at this as if we're creating 13 albums," Adrian Younge says in the video. "It was really about that hip-hop foundation, and making sure that those drums were just, like, big as day," adds Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

"One of the things I was explaining is the speed of hip-hop," showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker adds. "It happens at the speed of thought so if you really ran into Luke, and all of a sudden — boom, there's going to be a beat. That's all it takes."

Check out the new trailer below. Luke Cage drops September 30.
