Pass The Popcorn: Lee Daniels Set To Direct Doc On Harlem's Iconic Apollo Theater
One of the country's most prized institutions will soon be the subject of a new documentary from director Lee Daniels. In a joint venture with White Horse and Universal Music Group, Daniels is set to be at the helm of a feature length doc on NYC's iconic Apollo Theater.
Long overdue, the film will shine a much-needed light on the stage that brought black excellence to forefront of the entertainment industry as part of the Chitlin Circuit and has continued to champion those superlative talents throughout the 20th and 21st centuries since its 1934 opening. We don't really need to run down the list, but just in case you're missing the weight of The Apollo's presence, everyone from James Brown to Aretha Franklin to Duke Ellington to Jimi Hendrix to D'Angelo have graced that sweat-and-blood-soaked stage on 125th Street.
A date for The Apollo Film Project's release has yet to be revealed, but Daniels and the film's producers are encouraging those that have visited The Apollo at any point throughout its illustrious history to visit this website, where they'll be aggregating stories, photos and videos from performances witnessed. Keep your eyes on us for updates on the film's release.
