The build up to Kendrick Lamar‘s Tonight Show appearance has been highly unlike any in recent memory. Mostly, this is due to the fact that the man has an incomparable resumé when it comes to late-night TV, starting, of course, with Stephen Colbert’s legendary send-off from Comedy Central, then welcoming him back with equal, if not greater, gusto. Then came the Saturday Night Live performance, but that’s a whole other thing.
The time finally came and it proved to be yet another heroic outing, beginning with an incredibly insightful chat with Fallon. The two discussed Lamar’s monumental year (Grammy noms for that critically-adored album and all,) how he copes with the stresses of relentless hustle and taking his time with To Pimp A Butterfly to ensure it was precisely the album he wanted to release. Once we return from a seemingly endless commercial break, K Dot takes the stage and dives right into yet another new song, tailor-made for the evening, jumping between infectious, fast-burning r&b to jittery jazz & church chops. It was another electric performance from a man the never ceases to amaze on the late-night circuit.
