Jussie Smollet‘s hate crime case has been complex and confusing to follow, but this hasn’t stopped fans, critics, and celebrities alike from offering commentary on what’s known and unknown. Cardi B is the latest public figure to chime in with her two cents.
The rapper broadcasted her commentary on Instagram Live Monday, criticizing and questioning Smollet for his reported hate crime account, saying, “I’m really disappointed in Jussie Smollett— whatever the fuck his name is,” adding, “I feel like he fucked up Black History Month.”
Last week, authorities disputed local media reports and public speculation that Smollet’s attack was a hoax. The latest reports state Chicago police citing claims from two brothers affiliated with the actor were arrested as persons of interest, and now allege he paid them to stage the attack.
“Until he says out his mouth that this was fake and this shit staged then I don’t want to completely blame him. Because like someone I was talking to like they said police in Chicago are racists so they might probably try to frame him and make him look like he’s a liar. But if he’s not, then bro you fucked up for real. Why would you do that?”

She went on to say she’s willing to give Smollett “the benefit of the doubt” because of her own past experiences with the police, citing a story from several years ago in which she claims an NYPD officer put her in a headlock following a roadside dispute. She publically spoke on the incident and deleted the tweet and Instagram post shortly after.
Cardi went on to say the police attempted to intimidate her and her family to give a statement, but she never did. She then says the police “put out a statement saying that I did it to promote my album. Mind you, my album wasn’t even planned.” “Because I didn’t put out a statement, they put out a statement claiming that I was practically lying. So, I don’t want to call Jussie Smollett a complete lie.”
In September 2017, she went on talk about the incident in an interview with 99 JAMZ.
