Netflix has released the first full trailer for its hotly-anticipated A Different World reboot. Just in time for the fall semester, fans are getting a first glimpse into the return to Hillman College. The series stars Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, daughter of original series mainstays Dwayne Wayne, played by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy’s Whitley Gilbert-Wayne.
Both Hardison and Guy feature prominently in the trailer, as well as series favorites Darryl M. Bell, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Cree Summer. Original showrunner (and guest star) Debbie Allen, also makes an appearance.
Originally airing from 1987 to 1993, A Different World was NBC’s hit spinoff of The Cosby Show, which initially focused on the college life of Cosby… daughter Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet. After Bonet left the show and Allen took over as executive producer, the series shifted to focus on an ensemble, with Dwayne and Whitley at the center. The show earned acclaim for it’s approach to HBCU life, race issues, sexual harassment, HIV/AIDS, domestic abuse and a host of other issues.
Rounding out the reboot cast of characters are Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first‑generation criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five‑star athlete; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a psych major; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church‑raised small‑town girl; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur.
