Marvel Comics and Mass Appeal are teaming up for a new limited-edition comic book series called Legend Has It. The series will feature New York City rap legends like Nas, DJ Premier, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep and Slick Rick. The series brings the legendary emcees’ stories to life “in an epic narrative that bridges music, myth, and legacy,” per a press release.
Mass Appeal tapped Brandon Thomas to write the series, with Sanford Greene coming on board for the illustration.
“Working with Marvel on this comic is a celebration of hip-hop and its legacy,” Nas said in a statement, per Billboard. “There’s a story we tell through our music, and watching that energy come to life in these pages is a tribute to the culture that shaped us and continues to inspire generations.”
Legend Has It will also tell the stories of Raekwon, Big L and De La Soul. The artists featured are all part of Mass Appeal’s album series that has featured new releases all year from the aforementioned acts. This limited edition comic series blends Marvel’s beloved storytelling with hip-hop’s deep cultural roots to celebrate the impact of these artists through the medium of comic books.
The first issue will be unveiled on a panel called “Comics and Hip-Hop: A Marvel x Mass Appeal Conversation,” which will explore where hip-hop meets superhero mythology and tie together the creative connections between that lore and hip-hop storytelling.
Legend Has It will be available beginning Oct. 10 at New York Comic Con. Fans will have a chance to purchase an exclusive variant edition of the comic.
