Lizzo’s Openness About Her Body Journey is Her Greatest Strength
The Grammy winner has invited fans along for every step of her fitness experience.
Lizzo’s body transformation journey has been something the Grammy winner has shared with her fans virtually every step of the way. Her transparency has been a hallmark of her celebrity for the entirety of her career, as she’s been frank and forthright about body positivity and self esteem issues.
When Lizzo took the stage at Coachella in early April, fans got to see her body transformation up close. The superstar performed alongside Sexxy Red in black underwear, underneath a white top–with black fishnet stockings, twerking and playing the flute in black boots, and hoop earrings. She also wore chunky silver bracelets and a large gold ring.
She’s worked hard to get to this place. And she says it began with wanting to feel better, mentally.
“Once I started working out for mental health, to have balanced mental health or endorphins, so that I don’t look at myself in the mirror and feel ashamed of myself and feel disgusted with myself, exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body,” she told fans in a in May 2023 TikTok. “My body is gonna change, everyone’s bodies change. That’s life.”
“The weight that is no longer on me is not just fat or physical," she explained on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast last year. “I released so much to get to this point, and I think people can see that, and I don't want to describe anything as loss.”
“I’ve gained a sense of self,” she continued. “I’ve gained a lifestyle that I actually really love, and I'm like, ‘I can maintain this.’ I’ve gained [a] new perspective on nutrition and the science behind cardio and weight lifting.”
In December, she was honest about how online comments can be hurtful while remaining defiantly committed to doing what’s best for herself.
“Today I saw a fat joke about me — in 2025 — and it was viral. It was a dumb joke and they were just laughing at me because I'm fat…. Let me be a reminder to everyone to NEVER let anyone shame you for what you choose to do with your body,” she wrote on Instagram. “Because when you're big they talk s---, when you're small they talk s---. Your body will never be good enough for them because it's not FOR them. It's for you.”
Being her biggest champion and sharing her highlights and missteps with her audience has provided a realistic example of what it can look like when one is working to address body and health issues. And she’s adamant that haters aren’t going to knock her off of her path.
“If I get a BBL, mind ur business,” she wrote. “If I lose 100 lbs, mind ur business, if I gain every pound back and then some… mind ur f---ing business.”
And her upcoming album, Bitch, echoes that defiance. The project is set to drop on June 5.
“Reclaiming the word Bitch is power,” she explains. “It’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love. So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity, like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favorite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100% that bitch!”
