JAY-Z Explains Making Amends With His Dad on "Footnotes of Adnis"

One of the more powerful tracks on JAY-Z's 4:44 album is a bonus cut.

The song is "Adnis," and it is centered around the relationship between Hov and his father (who he famously had a strained relationship with).

On the song, JAY writes a letter to his father, who died years ago. The letter is one of understanding, not anger, as he tries to empathies with the circumstances his father was going through.

Like other important tracks on the album, there are footnotes. And on Monday, JAY released the "Footnotes of Adnis." It features appearances from the likes Chris Rock, Van Jones, and Mahershala Ali. Each person is talking about the lessons they learned from their father.

And then there is Will Smith, who talks about his father, but also talks about being dad. He tells the story of being on the "Whip Your Hair" tour with Willow Smith. In the middle of the tour, Willow wanted to go home. Will Smith kept pushing her, telling her that they had to finish the tour. And then she did what any 10-year-old would do: she cut her hair.
