Sony to Release its Own Retro Video Game Console: Playstation Classic

Playstaton Classic Announced Source: Sony

Retro video games aren't going anywhere

This winter, Sony will release the PlayStation Classic, a mini version of one of the most iconic video game systems of all time: the original PlayStation.

Sony made the announcement on Tuesday night ( September 19th) on its Twitter page. The system will come with two controllers and will be preloaded with 20 classic games. Five of those titles have been announced: Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms.

What's a bummer is that you'll only be able to play games preloaded into the system. (So for those who still have PlayStation games lying around...sorry.)

The PlayStation Classic will release on December 3rd 2018, 24 years after the original drooped. (PlayStation was released on December 3rd, 1994 in Japan.)

Eric Lempel, who is the Senior Vice President, PlayStation Worldwide Marketing, said this about the release:

Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

Retro video games have become all the rage, with the huge success of the NES Classic Edition and the Super NES Classic. Now Sony is getting into the game. The only question: will PaRappa the Rapper be featured?

Check out the introduction video below. And preorder the system here.
