The photo shoot finds Issa Rae channeling Nina Simone, Missy Elliott, and Solange.
In an editorial for Hannah magazine Issa Rae dressed up as three black women who have made important contributions to music: Nina Simone, Missy Elliott, and Solange. The spread, which was published Wednesday, was styled by fashion team Wayman and Micah and photographed by Elton Anderson Jr.
Following the release of the photo shoot, Elliott spoke approvingly of Rae channeling her, writing on Twitter: “Yo Issa Rae nailed this pic! Big up! You did that!”

Rae is currently starring on the second season of her hit HBO series, Insecure, which she also executive produces. Aside from Insecure, Rae will also be working on her first full-length project this year. Titled Empress of Serenity, the film will feature Bill Hader as an animal rights lawyer who is shocked by the news of his mother passing away. Encouraged to go on a 45-day cruise to heal by his estranged father, Hader’s character ends up befriending Rae’s character Michelle, who is described as a reclusive kindred spirit. The film is loosely based on author David Foster Wallace‘s book of the same name. Production on the film is slated to begin sometime in August.
