The Hidden Figures and Moonlight actor will be portraying police detective Wayne Hays in the series. Hays is from Northwest Arkansas and fights crime in the nearby Ozarks. As with its predecessors, the third season of True Detective will be set across different narrative timelines.

Creator and original showrunner Nic Pizzolatto will once again write all the episodes, as well as direct alongside Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier.

"I'm tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy," Pizzolatto said to Variety. "I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story."

"Nic has written truly remarkable scripts," Casey Bloys, HBO's president of programming, added. "With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective."

The third season of True Detective does not currently have an air date, nor is there a set date for the start of production.
