New York's Governors Ball is the latest festival to officially cancel in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The organizers released a statement on Thursday:
"It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of Governors Ball 2020 due to COVID-19," the organizers said. "Simply put--due to current government mandates and the evolving situation in NYC, it is neither safe nor prudent to move forward with our June dates. The well-being of our fans, artists, staff, vendors, partners, and the surrounding NYC community is always our #1 priority."
Vampire Weekend, Solange and Missy Elliot would have headlined the festival. Additionally, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Miley Cyrus, and Carly Rae Jepsen appeared on the lineup. Ticketholders can request refunds or ticket transfers to next year's festival on the GovBall website. Ticketholders must make refund requests by Friday, April 10, 2020.
Firefly, South By Southwest, and Glastonbury festivals previously announced the cancelations of their 2020 events. Coachella will attempt to launch its festival in October. J. Cole's Dreamville Fest is postponed until August 29. Pharrell's Something in the Water Festival canceled their event on March 13.
Live Nation also announced its plans to halt concerts and tours for the foreseeable future. The company plans to resume business as usual in April. Employees will work from home until further notice.
