Do we have an unofficial Grammy boycott on our hands?
Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake all turned down the chance to perform at the 2019 Grammys, according to a new report from the New York Times. Add that to the fact that it's unclear whether any of those artists will show up for the awards at all. (Drake, Kendrick, and Gambino all have nominations in major categories like Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.)
The NY Times talked to Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich, who said:
The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world...When they don’t take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad.
It's not just hip-hop artists who are saying no. Earlier in the week it came out that Ariana Grande turned down the chance to perform after they wouldn't let her perform "7 Rings," a rap song.
