The Mobb Deep cut comes from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton series.
This month will mark a year since Prodigy — one half of Mobb Deep — passed away from accidental choking. Following his death came news that more music would be released, and now fans are getting their first taste of that in “Boom Goes The Cannon.”
Appearing on Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s Hamilton series, the track includes a verse that references Miranda’s critically-acclaimed Broadway musical. The previously unreleased song probably won’t be featured on the upcoming Mobb Deep album that’s supposed to be released sometime before the end of this year.
“The way I’m reflecting on it is I’m just trying to keep the legacy alive,” Havoc previously said about the forthcoming album. “We deserve that, and I’m actually currently working on the new album in conjunction with the family. It’ll be out there pretty soon. Before the end of the year it’ll be out.”
Near the time of his death, Prodigy was hospitalized for an episode triggered by his sickle-cell anemia. He passed away while in a Las Vegas hospital. The cause of death was accidental choking.
Two years ago, Miranda released The Hamilton Mixtape, a 23-track project that featured The Roots, Common, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Chance The Rapper, Francis & The Lights, John Legend, Alicia Keys.
