Mixtape Monday: Illingsworth, Bobby Earth, Low Blow, Jetsam + More
Illingsworth, Low Blow, Bobby Earth, Jetsam and more kick off the fall season with great new music this Mixtape Monday.
Illingsworth is first up with his Mello Music Group debut You’re No Fun. Bobby Earth drops a bit of progressive soul with Cloudy McSunshine. Low Blow puts points on the board with First Book of Timothy and Jetsam keeps the heat coming for Rappers I Know with the otherworldly Realms tape.
Projects from WateRR x Dirty Diggs and Flee Lord ensure a strong showing from the rappers. Instrumental and experimental projects from Small Professor, Logic Marselis, Joe Corfield and Lester, Nowhere round out the collection.
Logic Marselis – Silk Durag
Fresh off of Super Audio World 2, prolific producer Logic Marselis captures the fall season with Silk Durag. A great addition to the collection for anyone into boom-bap & chill, the 8-track project also packs a titular nod to the coveted 360 wave hairstyle.
Illingsworth – You’re No Fun
Detroit producer Illingsworth makes his Mello Music Group debut with You’re No Fun. The 17-track, “mostly instrumental” project features appearances from Denmark Vessey and Open Mike Eagle. Illingsworth also adds to the mix with some bars of his own.
You’re No Fun is a musical invitation to live in the moment, every moment, whether playful or painful.
WateRR x Dirty Diggs – Wizard Of The Crystal
Just months after the release of Foundation of Life, Chicago spitter WateRR links with Dirty Diggs on the collaborative seven-track project Wizard Of The Crystal. WateRR needs no help on the mic, but gets an assist from Ty Farris, Supreme Cerebral, Recognize Ali, Killa Kali and NowaahTheFlood.
Flee Lord – Lord Talk 2
Flee Lord teams with the likes of Meyhem Lauren, Crimeapple, Termanology, Westside Gunn, and Conway the Machine on the hard-hitting, eight-track slapper Lord Talk 2; a proper dose of gutter bars for listeners that can’t get enough of rap’s newest class of goons.
Bobby Earth – Cloudy McSunshine
Progressive soul and experimental artist Bobby Earth drops his fifth project of the year with the release of Cloudy McSunshine. An impressive list of collaborators anchors the twelve-track project, including Nanna. B, Ayomari, St. Beauty and Nonchalant Savant.
Lester, Nowhere – Extra
Rising Italian producer Lester, Nowhere pays tribute to Memphis Phonk with the Extra tape.
Radio Juicy presents “Extra” by young Italian beatmaker Lester, Nowhere. Slowly moving in an hazy atmosphere, like a dark room filled with smoke and people dancing slowly almost like a slow motion rendered by stroboscopic light spot. This album is Lester, Nowhere’s take and homage on Memphis Phonk and he delivers. The tape feels inspired, fresh and original. If you are already familiar with Lester, Nowhere then this will be a nice surprise if not this is a great introduction to the talented beatmaker.
Low Blow – First Book of Timothy
Inglewood MC Low Blow makes his full-length debut with the blues and gospel-tinged grown man rap manifesto entitled First Book of Timothy.
“First Book of Timothy” finds Low Blow reflecting on his life, recounting stories of hardship and loss, relationships and social issues over soulful beats with his unique brand of melodic rhymes and cadences. The album includes production from Compton native Luke Ellington and Low Blow, along with added production from Allakoi “Mic Holden” Peete, and features musicians Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Uncle Chucc (1500 or Nothin), Jose Rios, Ernest Tibbs, Jamire Williams, Jimetta Rose, and more.
Jetsam – Realms
FWMJ’s Rappers I Know label keeps the fall releases coming with the arrival of Jetsam’s otherworldly instrumental tape Realms. The project is a solid ten tracks of spacious, progressive boom-bap for the rap futurist in you.
Small Professor – Free Jawns
Philadelphia’s own Small Professor keeps adding to his ginormous catalog and the Jawns instrumental series with the release of Free Jawns.
i made this to distract me from mixing “church jawns” (that’s dropping next, word to chris rogers). all samples from the band in the title, which makes this the little b̶r̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ sister of the chicago/queen/prince jawns set. technically an EP, but who cares. enjoy! – sp
Joe Corfield – Patterns
UK producer Joe Corfield drops a serious gem with the release of his latest full-length instrumental project entitled Patterns.
The album is all about Patterns, otherwise known as the details that creates reality, after all everything is just formed of tinier things repeating themselves. But this expands also over the chemical nature of the universe, we’re talking occurring events as odd or mundane as they are and also behavior of all living things. Basically everything can be observed to follow certain patterns. In this case music, but not only the music itself, the industry, the musicians and listeners all follow their own patterns that blend together. We’re all part of this incredible web connecting us all.
