Yung Miami’s viral hit “Spend Dat” has become the song of the summer, but it has always been one of the year’s most controversial tunes. The Florida rapper’s song has sparked online debate and drawn commentary and criticism from all corners, with fellow music stars like India.Arie and Luke chiming in with a take.
But R&B superstar Monica clearly isn’t one of the “Spend Dat” haters. The songstress incorporated the song into her set during her performance at Essence Fest this year.
After Yung Miami, aka Caresha, saw the “Boy Is Mine” singer embrace the hit song, she praised Monica on Instagram.
“Ahhhh…. This is what an OG look like!!!” wrote Yung Miami. “Thank you @monicadenise for hitting that sh*t one time and showing ya girl some LOVE. We can celebrate each other’s wins and just have a good time! This is sisterhood this is black excellence!! Thank you Monica you’ve truly always been a REAL ONE & stay embracing and pouring into the girls! A ICON, A LEGEND ”
“I Love You @yungmiami305 Support and sisterhood is my stance always,” Monica responded. “So much love for you and your family!”
The moment comes after India.Arie sparked extensive online debate with her criticism of the song.
"I did not call for a boycott; I commented on someone’s thread calling for a boycott,” she said in an Instagram video in early July. “I think people should learn how to do what’s best for them. That’s what I want for people. I want you to have an understanding of what’s good for you, and have the love for yourself to do it. That’s what I want. But also, who cares what I want for you? I know what I want for me, and I do what is best for me. … I think people just need to make choices for themselves."
