BuzzAngle Music has published an interesting report on the state of music in the year 2016 filled with statistics, some of which are surprising and others not so much. It is the group's first ever yearly report. Vinyl records are indeed making a come back with a reported 26% increase in sales in the year 2016 and accounted for 8.0% of all physical album sales. Compared to 2015, CD album sales were down 14%. Physical albums sales were down 11.7% overall.
Unsurprisingly Drake dominated the charts this year. The Canadian rapper took the spot for artist of the year with 6.1 million in total album consumption units. Drake's album Views is also the album of the year with 3.9 million total album units while Drake's hit track "One Dance" is the song of the year with 5.6 million total song consumption units. Music streaming saw an all time high this year with 250.7 billion songs streamed in 2016. Many of the songs streamed belonged to the Hip-Hop/Rap genre, which took the top spot for most streamed genre in terms of total song consumption at 18.2%. Pop took the spot for top genre in terms of total album consumption with 14.6%, barely beating out Hip-Hop/Rap which was at 14.4%. To check out the full BuzzAngle Music report for 2016 head here.
