Pop Smoke stars in Eddie Huang’s directorial debut.

Back in September, author, chef, and restauranteur Eddie Huang told The Dave Chang Show how he nearly booked a remake of the 1985 film The Last Dragon starring Pop Smoke. In the interview, he also revealed he’d already shot the movie Boogie, with Pop playing a small role. The Last Dragon remake didn’t materialize, however, on Tuesday, the official trailer for Boogie arrived. Stream the trailer below.

The movie follows Alfred “Boogie” Chin, a Chinese-American basketball player. Pop Smoke plays Monk, a rival basketball player. The film debuts in theaters on March 5, 2021.

“A lot of actors just don’t have the depth of emotion and experiences,” Huang told The New York Times in a June interview. “But because of what Pop’s gone through, he has a tremendous well to draw from. He gave me a thousand percent. They were tough 16-hour days, overnights, and he shot five overnights in a row. Kids were coming on the bridge to watch us shoot the scenes. We would play Pop’s record. All our actors, the extras, the kids on the bridge watching us shoot scenes, everyone was doing the Woo dance. It was pretty special.”

The trailer is soundtracked by Pop’s 50 Cent-interpolating single “Got it On Me.” The film’s soundtrack will be available through Pop Smoke’s manager Steven Victor’s label Victor Victor Worldwide and Republic Records. The label’s roster also includes Ski Mask the Slump God and producer CashMoneyAP.

The film marks Huang’s directorial debut. Dave East will also appear in the film alongside Taylor Takahasi, Pamelyn Chee, Taylour Paige, and Jorge Lendeborg, Jr, who recently appeared in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Stay tuned for further updates on the status of streaming services carrying Boogie.
