Kehlani returns to address the looming rumors about her past relationships in a self-directed music video for her new single “Everybody Business.”
Over the past few years, the singer-songwriter has garnered negative attention stemming specifically from who she’s dated, how long she’s been with them and more. In the new visual, she addresses these issues head-on including gossip blogs and headlines that have run with commentary that can prove to be emotionally damaging.
“Everybody Business” is shot around her home and features the singer reflecting passionately on what’s been on her mind recently. It’s a follow-up to her recent single “Valentine’s Day” which announced the end of her relationship with YG.
“I ain’t never been a half-ass lover” are the opening lines of the single which she declares confidently. She goes on to sing, “Rather lay out the train tracks for ya / Hit the pavement for ya / Make a statement / And you ain’t never had to ask that.”
I love the fact that Kehlani is reclaiming her autonomy by continuing to release new music recently. Just like Rep. Maxine Waters, she’s “reclaiming her time” and isn’t going to allow the viral nature of social media to stop her from releasing music.
Before the video dropped, she shared on her Instagram that when she wrote the track she knew it’d be a “one of the ones.” She also added that she flipped Pharrel’s “Frontin” in a guitar ballad.
