The company is capitalizing on the movie’s popularity and taking shots at their biggest rival.
The Joker promo run is still not over. This time, instead of actual Warner Bros. promotion, Burger King is in on the fun. The company recently released an advertisement titled “King Stairs,” set at the infamous stairs on the Bronx’s Shakespeare and Jerome Avenues that appear during a pivotal scene in the movie. The launch was timed to coincide with the movie’s retail debut. Additionally, the promotion allows them to take thinly-veiled shots at their biggest rival, McDonald’s.
“Dear Bronx,” the ad reads, between multiple shots of clown-faced tourists taking selfies on the stairs, “We know clowns can be annoying. But don’t worry.” The promotion offers Bronx residents a free Whopper delivery via Uber Eats, with the promo code “KINGSTAIRS.” It’s worth noting that Uber Eats’ delivery and service fees still apply.
Burger King has been taking not-so-subtle shots at their longtime rival for a few years now. In 2017, they launched “Scary Clown Night” via ad agency LOLA MullenLowe. The promotion offered free Whoppers to anyone who wore a clown costume to Burger King on Halloween night. The agency’s leader Pancho Cassis came up with the idea. Additionally, Cassis continued to poke fun at McDonald’s by creating a print campaign about children’s fear of parties.
Subsequently, Cassis became the global Chief Operating Officer of the Madrid-based David agency, which produced the Bronx ad.
