As much attention as Detroit has received ahead of its nationwide release (Friday, August 4th,) the film's soundtrack has been a puzzling omission from the discussion.
With deep cuts and classics from luminaries of soul, funk, and jazz (John Coltrane, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, The Dramatics and more) filling an expertly-curated tracklist (see below,) the Detroit OST captures the full force of the era's protest anthems and romance records, and even traces those threads through the decades since to studious disciples likeBilal and The Roots. Today, the Soulquarian outfit has unveiled their powerful new collaboration "It Ain't Fair," ahead of the soundtrack's release this Friday, July 28th, via Motown Records (the only possible home for this particular film's score.)
